There’s no single answer — it depends on where you are in life. Here are the windows that actually matter to Canton residents.

The four windows

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

The 7-month window around your 65th birthday. This is the first — and usually best if you are not employed — time to enroll.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

October 15 through December 7 every year. This is when you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, switch between Advantage and Original Medicare, or change your Part D drug plan.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (OEP)

January 1 through March 31. If you have Medicare Advantage, you get one chance to switch.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

Triggered by a life event — moving, losing employer coverage (whether you left the job or they let you go), qualifying for Medicaid, and others. Each SEP has its own rules, so the answer depends on what changed.

Still not sure? Take the enrollment quiz — four questions, plain English.
